Cal Lutheran lost its Homecoming game 14-13 to Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 17, at William Rolland Stadium in Thousand Oaks.

A 43-yard field goal attempt that fell short with five minutes left ended the Kingsmen's last chance to retake the lead. The loss drops head coach Anthony Lugo's squad to 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC). Kickoff had been moved to 7:30 p.m. for the Homecoming contest.

The Kingsmen led for most of the night. After a scoreless first quarter, quarterback Joe Farley capped a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run with 1:52 left in the second quarter. Matthew Montegna's extra point made it 7-0. Cal Lutheran's defense then blocked a 41-yard Pomona-Pitzer field goal attempt as the first half expired.

The Sagehens (4-2, 3-1 SCIAC) answered in the third quarter. Quarterback Dominick Catalano hit Connor Conneely on a three-yard touchdown pass to cap a 79-yard drive and tie the game at 7-7.

Kicker Dylan Armendariz put Cal Lutheran back ahead 10-7 early in the fourth quarter with a 31-yard field goal. Pomona-Pitzer responded with a 65-yard scoring drive, again connecting on a Catalano-to-Conneely touchdown pass, this time from 20 yards, to take a 14-10 lead with 11:25 remaining.

The Kingsmen defense forced a fumble and recovered it at the Pomona-Pitzer 26-yard line, setting up Armendariz for an eight-yard field goal that cut the deficit to 14-13. Cal Lutheran drove again, but the 43-yard attempt to go ahead came up short.

The defense kept the Kingsmen in it all night, according to Cal Lutheran athletics. Linebacker Logan Bowers led the effort with 12 tackles, 1.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss. Blake Hurley added 11 tackles and two pass breakups. Drew Nees recorded nine tackles, 1.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. JD Vargas and Derek Hurley also recovered fumbles. The unit totaled four sacks.

Farley finished 14-of-29 passing for 153 yards and added the rushing touchdown. Receiver Nico Caruso caught three passes for 60 yards, including a 32-yard reception. Running back Jordan Barbadillo carried 11 times for 40 yards. Cal Lutheran was outgained 319-224 in total offense but converted both fourth-down attempts and went 2-for-2 in the red zone.

The Kingsmen head to La Verne on Saturday, Oct. 24, for a 4 p.m. kickoff at Ortmayer Stadium.
