High school students across the Conejo Valley can apply for a six-session leadership program that pairs them with guest speakers and earns community service credit.

The Conejo/Las Virgenes Future Foundation is accepting applications for its 18th annual Youth Leadership Program, as first reported by The Acorn. Students in grades 9-12 who attend school in the Conejo Valley or Las Virgenes region are eligible. Applications are due Monday, Oct. 26.

The program runs virtually over six Wednesday afternoon sessions at 4 p.m. Sessions are scheduled for Nov. 18, Dec. 9, Jan. 6, Feb. 10, March 10 and March 31. Each meeting features guest speakers from varied backgrounds.

"An exciting and diverse group of speakers will be making presentations," Karen Malatesta, executive director of the Future Foundation, told The Acorn.

The program combines community service and leadership experience over several months, which can be viewed favorably by college admissions screeners, according to The Acorn's report. Students earn community service credit based on attendance.

There is a $100 nonrefundable participation fee upon acceptance, according to the foundation's website. Scholarships are available based on need.

Accepted students will be notified by Friday, Nov. 6.

The Thousand Oaks-based nonprofit was founded in 1972 and has spent more than four decades running programs for local high school students. The Youth Leadership Program follows 25 years of Youth Congresses the foundation previously sponsored.

To apply, call 818-880-1054 or email [email protected] before the Oct. 26 deadline.
