Thousand Oaks will hold a public Day of Remembrance on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 4 p.m. to honor the 12 people killed in the Borderline Bar & Grill shooting eight years ago.

The gathering will take place at the Lakeside Pavilion and Healing Garden, the memorial space at Conejo Creek North Park dedicated to the victims of the Nov. 7, 2018, mass shooting.

Ventura County Board of Supervisors Chair Jeff Gorell announced the event in a Facebook post, calling on the community to gather "to honor those we lost, support those forever impacted, and keep their memories alive."

The Ventura County District Attorney's Office also promoted the remembrance, stating the event honors "the survivors, responders, families and community forever changed by that night."

The shooting killed 12 people and injured 248, according to the Conejo Recreation and Park District. The Healing Garden was dedicated on Nov. 7, 2019, the one-year anniversary of the attack. The park district describes the garden as a community space for contemplation, meditation and prayer.

The garden sits within Conejo Creek North Park, a 27-acre creekside site at 1379 East Janss Road. The park is also home to the Thousand Oaks Library, Teen Center and Goebel Adult Center.

Gorell wrote that the community "came together with compassion, strength, and an unwavering commitment to one another" after the shooting. He said that spirit of unity "continues to define us."

The event is open to the public. It begins at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Lakeside Pavilion and Healing Garden in Thousand Oaks.
