Cal Lutheran women's volleyball hosts the 19th annual Cal Lu Fornia Invitational on Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19, in Thousand Oaks.
The two-day tournament at the Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center on the California Lutheran University campus brings together seven NCAA Division III programs from California and Texas for 11 matches across two courts: Gilbert Arena and Soiland Multipurpose Arena. All seven teams are raising funds and awareness for pediatric cancer through Go4theGoal's Lace Up 4 Pediatric Cancer initiative, according to Cal Lutheran athletics.
Four Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) programs fill the bracket: Cal Lutheran, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands. UC Santa Cruz rounds out the California contingent, while Hardin-Simmons and Schreiner make the trip from Texas.
The Regals open Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. against Schreiner in Gilbert Arena. They return Saturday, Sept. 19, for a noon match against Hardin-Simmons and close the tournament at 6 p.m. against UC Santa Cruz.
Friday's action begins at 1 p.m. with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps playing Hardin-Simmons in Gilbert Arena and Pomona-Pitzer meeting UC Santa Cruz in Soiland. Saturday's final matches start at 3 p.m.
September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and the Regals will wear gold shoelaces throughout the month to support the cause. The university has set up a donation page through the tournament site.
In their last confirmed result, the Regals fell to Westminster College in five sets on Sept. 5 at the Pacific Coast Classic in La Verne. Cal Lutheran rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a deciding fifth set before losing 11-15. Cienna Alvarez led the offense with 14 kills, and Keegan Corley anchored the defense with 30 digs.
Cal Lutheran also competed at the KTIS Classic in St. Paul, Minn., on Sept. 11-12, though results were not available.
Admission is $10 plus a $1.20 service fee per person, per day. Students, faculty and staff with a valid SCIAC institution ID get in free, as do children under 12.
Cash is not accepted at the door.
All 11 matches will be livestreamed on FloCollege, the SCIAC's official streaming partner. Before the invitational, the Regals host Simpson University on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 5 p.m. in Gilbert Arena.
