A 14-month-old child died Tuesday, Sept. 15, after going into cardiac arrest at Westlake Elementary School in Thousand Oaks.

The Ventura County Sheriff's Office and Ventura County Fire Department responded to the school at 1571 E. Potrero Road after receiving a report of a child in cardiac arrest. Deputies arrived around 3:30 p.m., according to the Ventura County Star. Fire crews took over CPR at the scene before the child was transported by ambulance to Los Robles Regional Medical Center, VCFD spokesman Andrew Dowd said.

The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Capt. Robert Yoos of the Ventura County Sheriff's Office said the Major Crimes Unit is conducting a death investigation but that no foul play is suspected. Yoos said the unit responds to unwitnessed or unexpected deaths.

"Out of respect for the family and what they are going through, no further details will be provided at this time," Yoos said, according to The Acorn.

The child was not a student at the school. The Conejo Valley Unified School District described the incident in a notice to Westlake Elementary parents as an isolated event involving a community member who was brought onto campus during a medical emergency. School staff immediately called first responders and followed safety protocols, the district said.

The notice addressed the visible presence of emergency vehicles and officials in the school's front parking lot and office area. The front office remained closed to the public during the response.

The district confirmed all Westlake Elementary students and staff were safe. Law enforcement personnel remained at the site into Tuesday night.

The sheriff's office has not announced a timeline for the investigation or released further details about the circumstances.
