Thousand Oaks High School product Alex Singleton led all players with 15 tackles in the Denver Broncos' 31-10 Monday Night Football loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, Sept. 14.

Singleton, a team captain for the third consecutive year, had nine tackles by halftime of the season opener at Arrowhead Stadium. CFL historian Daryl Slade, who tracked Singleton's career from his Calgary Stampeders days, reported the game-high 15-tackle total on X after the final whistle. An official box score had not been published as of Tuesday.

The tackle total was a bright spot in an otherwise rough night for Denver's defense. Kenneth Walker III gashed the Broncos for 173 yards on 23 carries and scored twice, according to the Denver Post. The Post's postgame analysis identified Singleton among Broncos defenders who missed tackles in the loss.

Denver's tackling problems went beyond any one player. The Broncos posted a 29.8% missed tackle rate, the third worst in an NFL game since 2018, according to NextGen Stats cited by the Denver Post. Kansas City gained 247 yards after broken tackles, accounting for 63.2% of the Chiefs' total yardage.

Singleton, 32, was born and raised in Thousand Oaks and attended Thousand Oaks High School before playing college football at Montana State. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks in 2015, he spent three seasons in the CFL with the Calgary Stampeders, winning a Grey Cup in 2018. He joined the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019 and led the team in tackles in both 2020 and 2021 before signing with Denver in 2022.

His path back to the field this season was itself a comeback. Singleton ruptured his ACL in Week 3 of the 2024 season and missed the rest of that year. He returned in 2025 to start 16 games and lead the Broncos with 135 tackles, earning a Pro Bowl alternate selection.

In a pregame interview with ESPN, Singleton was asked whether he expected Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes to be at full strength after a knee injury. "Well since I could have played nine months after my ACL [surgery] I'm going to assume he's also going to be able to," Singleton said. "I expect him to be him."

Singleton signed a two-year, $15.5 million contract extension with the Broncos in March 2026. His teammates voted him captain for a third straight season ahead of the opener, the Broncos announced.

Denver hosts the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 11:05 a.m. PT on CBS at Empower Field at Mile High.
