Conejo Valley Unified School District is urging high school students ages 16 and 17 to pre-register to vote as the first voter education week of the school year begins.
The CVUSD Board of Education adopted Resolution #26/27-06 at its Sept. 2 meeting, formally backing California High School Voter Education Weeks. The first two-week window runs Sept. 14–25, according to a district announcement.
The resolution encourages all CVUSD high schools, including Thousand Oaks High School, Newbury Park High School and Westlake High School, to promote civic education during the designated periods. It also calls on administrators to name one or more students as voter outreach coordinators to encourage peer registration.
Assembly Bill 1817 designates the last two full weeks of September and April for voter education efforts statewide. The California Secretary of State's office runs the program, which pairs high schools with county elections officials to promote registration on campus.
Kenneth Loo, assistant superintendent of instructional and student services, prepared the resolution. The board meeting agenda listed its fiscal impact as none.
Board Trustee Cindy Goldberg stressed the stakes during the Sept. 2 discussion. "Every vote matters. There are local elections that have been lost by double digits, so your voice matters even if you think it doesn't. It does," Goldberg said at the meeting, as reported by the NPHS Panther Prowler, Newbury Park High School's student newspaper.
The resolution also encourages students to work as poll workers. The Secretary of State's office says students who are at least 16, maintain a 2.5 GPA and have permission from a parent or guardian and their school are eligible to serve on Election Day.
Pre-registration does not lower the voting age. Students who complete the form at registertovote.ca.gov will have their registration activate automatically when they turn 18. To qualify, a student must be a U.S. citizen and California resident.
The district's second voter education week runs April 12–23, 2027.
