Photographs, balloons and garden flags honoring Mark and Jacob Iskander were stolen from the brothers' memorial in Westlake Village on the sixth anniversary of their deaths.
The Lost Hills Sheriff's Station is investigating the theft, which occurred Sept. 29 at the lakeside fence along Triunfo Canyon Road at Saddle Mountain Drive, The Acorn first reported. No suspect has been identified.
Community members placed the items on Monday, Sept. 28, the afternoon before the anniversary. The display included placards with photographs of the boys, balloons in their favorite colors of green and blue, and garden flags. By late morning on Tuesday, Sept. 29, nearly everything was gone. One sign remained: an image of Mark and Jacob in white church garments with angel wings and the words, "Mark & Jacob Rest in Peace, Mom & Dad are with You."
Nancy Iskander, the boys' mother, posted an appeal on Nextdoor on Wednesday, Sept. 30, asking neighbors with surveillance footage to contact her.
"6 years since the darkest day of my life: The horrific death of my sons on Triunfo Canyon," Iskander wrote.
Iskander family friend and advocate Julie Cohen said Westlake Village officials had given permission for the memorial items to be placed at the site. Neither city workers nor employees of the nearby Westlake Athletic Club removed them, Cohen said.
Cohen addressed the Westlake Village City Council at its Sept. 30 meeting, saying the memorial had been vandalized and urging anyone with information to contact the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station. She told the council the family hopes to establish a permanent memorial at the intersection and suggested renaming it "Mark and Jacob Way."
Mark was 11 and Jacob was 8 when they were struck and killed in the crosswalk at that intersection on Sept. 29, 2020. Rebecca Grossman of Hidden Hills was driving the speeding Mercedes-Benz SUV. A Van Nuys jury convicted Grossman of murder, and Superior Court Judge Joseph Brandolino sentenced her to 15 years to life in state prison. In June 2026, a civil jury found Grossman and co-defendant Scott Erickson jointly liable for $176 million in compensatory damages, The Acorn reported. Grossman was ordered to pay an additional $21 million in punitive damages.
No formal hearing date has been set for the permanent memorial or intersection renaming proposal.
Anyone with information about the theft can contact the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station at (818) 878-1808. The station is at 27050 Agoura Road in Agoura Hills and is open 24 hours.
