A Van Nuys man accused of belonging to a transnational organized crime crew faces three felony charges for a residential burglary on San Antonio Street in Thousand Oaks.
Hugo Armando Causil Ramos was charged with residential burglary, conspiracy to commit residential burglary and grand theft of a firearm, Ventura County District Attorney Erik Nasarenko announced in a press release Friday. Prosecutors also filed special allegations that the crime involved theft in concert with others and demonstrated planning, sophistication and professionalism.
The charges stem from an Aug. 24 burglary on San Antonio Street. Ventura County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the home, where Ring surveillance video allegedly captured Causil Ramos knocking on the front door about 15 minutes before multiple unidentified people were recorded leaving the residence, according to the DA's office.
The suspects allegedly stole jewelry, cash and a Ruger pistol.
The DA's office alleges Causil Ramos was part of a sophisticated transnational organized crime crew. The press release did not identify the crew by name or describe its reach beyond that allegation.
Sheriff's detectives arrested Causil Ramos on Friday, Oct. 16, after what the DA's office called a comprehensive investigation. He pleaded not guilty on Tuesday, Oct. 20.
The court initially set bail at $200,000 but subsequently released Causil Ramos on pre-trial monitoring, over the objection of the DA's office, according to the press release. The release did not specify the conditions of his monitoring.
The case is being prosecuted by the DA's Serious-Violent Felonies Unit, which handles the office's most serious cases. No other suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the burglary, though the surveillance video allegedly showed multiple people leaving the home.
An early disposition conference is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29, at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom 12 of Ventura County Superior Court. Anyone with information about the case can contact the Ventura County Sheriff's Office or the DA's office. Chief Investigator Scott Whitney can be reached at 805-477-1614.
